Round 1 (Tuesday)

Emerging from under 30" of weekend snow in Bethesda, Mexican Erik Valtierra and Ryan Thompson of Namibia provided the highlight of the first round of qualifying for the the 2010 ASTI National Capital Open with a well matched 70 minute battle. With both players being relatively diminutive  raw power was taken out of the equation resulting in a fascinating contest of stylish swings and extremely precise and rapid footwork. Valtierra always looked in control but Thompson would not be easily denied and struggled on to take the match to a fourth set.  Both players worked all four corners of the court well but could not easily find a dominant niche to exploit against each other. In the end of the fourth  with a result looming Thompson became a little frozen and defensive, and the shots that had earned him the third set were put back on the shelf, and that was enough to tip the scales to Valtierra.

The record snow shut down regional airports and as a result Mexican Fernando Lopez had to fly in to Philly and then catch a bus in to a tough  part of Northeast DC after midnight to make the qualifications in time.  Fortunately he survived the trip and made it to Bethesda to put up a good fight against talented Welshman Jethro Binns.  Although Lopez did little wrong, Binns exploited a significant skill edge to wrest the win in three sets.

Local player and teaching pro Jahangir Naseem put up a great fight against regional veteran Patrick Chifunda. Chifunda appeared a little unsure how to deal with his lowly rated opponent who covered the court remarkably well and won some classy drop exchanges. In the end Naseem was only edged on  Chifunda's experience to vary the pace of the game and reduce his error rate at crucial moments in the game.

Round 2 (Thursday)

The NCO was postponed a day as another blizzard hit the US mid-Atlantic on Wednesday and shut down business across the area. Bethesda has been covered in over 40" of snow in the last week bringing the place to a standstill. Traffic is still disrupted, hindering preparations for players and officials alike.

Play resumed on Thursday with the second round of the qualifiers. Officials have made the decision to push all rounds from this round back a day.  Baltimore colleagues Wade Johnson and Legotla Mosope provided the most closely matched contest of the evening with an hour long tussle in front of an appreciative crowd. Mosope looked the sharper initially, moving feet and hands sufficiently faster than his opponent to have him on the back foot and looking a little awkward.  However as the game evolved Johnson cleverly changed his tactics pushing forward, to use his height and reach to cut off the ball and take the front court. Several sparkling rallies resulted as both players were happy to lift the pace in periods of the match. Johnson mixed the pace of his shots very well in the latter part of the match and exercised  many nice soft, accurate drops. Eventually the pressure was thrown back on to Mosope who was forced to play behind and cover more court to Johnson's accurate short gamed. The extra load began to show in the fourth game. Johnson kept up the pressure and Mosope's head began to drop from weariness. After 65 minutes Johnson cruised in the end to take a relatively comfortable fifth set.

Round of 16: Friday 12th

The weather continued to play havoc with the 2010 National Capital Open as snow filled lanes caused unprecedented traffic gridlock around Bethesda forcing players and spectators to abandon/park their cars at distances from the club and make the last mile on foot. Wade Johnstone's story took the cake. About a mile from the club and with only 15 minutes to arrive for his match, Wade handed over the wheel to his wife and started running. He made it, just. Played his match against Bernardo Samper lasting over 30 mins of playing time, recovered phoned his wife who was still missing,  then hot footed it back to join her in the car for the last 1/2 mile, which took another hour to drive!

The on court action lifted a level in most matches, most clearly in the speed of court movement of the payers.  The highlight match came  from the somewhat unlikely matchup of  top seed Miguel Rodriguez and the wildcard Zac Alexander. Alexander certainly lived up to the wildcard reputation surprising the top speed with a well blended mix of variety in attack and resilience and patience  in defense. The third game was most riveting, with Rodriguez lifting to 100% towards its end, placing remarkable pressure on his opponent. Alexander played his best squash  in that period effortlessly switching from full attack featuring  trademark sweeping nick attempts, to floating defense. Right at the death of the game, he weathered a barrage of counter attack from Miguel, by slowing the play to almost comical pace, but he kept it tight enough that his opponent was precluded from dispatching winners.  Whilst that period and third game win seemed to  herald great things for Alexander in the future, it was also the turning point of this match. In he fourth it almost looked as if he was so content with his third game form he forgot there was another game to win against a player of great class. Rodriguez then showed  why he was the top seed, taking  it up another notch, and this  time there was no answer from the Aussie.

Quarters: Saturday 13th

The quarters of the NCO  had organizers ecstatic, being the first day they had managed to get through without an act of God,  a natural or man made disaster interfering with play!!  The most remarkable characteristic of today's play was the even matching.  The player world rankings varied from 27 to 71 but there was not much to discriminate them in match play,  only the scoreboard after substantial time could do that. The fact that the shortest match was 47 minutes was testament to the close play.

Martin Knight began to display the recent good form that has seen him snare some good PSA wins, he was much sharper today than his opening round and whilst David Phillips's racquet was on fire again finding the nick regularly, Knight seemed equal to the task in digging it out with a re-drop or high lob. Phillips simply did not have the patience to cope with Knight's persistence in retrieval and he succumbed in three long sets.

Match of the round again featured our top seed Migual Rodriguez facing up against Australia's Ryan Cuskelly.   Again the match was very closely contested with neither player finding a means to dominate the other, rallys were extremely long with neither player willing to give away cheap points. Cuskelly managed to edge his opponent out in the first two games 12-10 but  the games were very long and seemed to be telling on Cuskelly who was beginning to stall for time and was beginning to show signs of fatigue.  Rodriguez appeared the stronger player in the third and managed to rack up a 10-6 lead and looked like the match had turned. Cuskelly however decided to dig in with a very long rally at that point which he eventually  won with a cracking dead nick. Then very uncharacteristically Rodriguez tinned the next two points after further long rally. Cuskelly looked out on his feet and the super fit Rodriguez looked like he was starting to tire. The rally of the match then occured with Cuskelly getting the advantage early sending Rodriguez flying to all corners in desperate lunges to backwall boast and lob, eventually Cuskelly won the point after a series of power nick attempts,  finally hitting a  flat roller sending the crowd in to eruption. Cuskelly continued to shoot early and find the nick in what was, given his obvious weariness, a somewhat desperate attempt to end the game, this time the strategy succeeded.

Campbell Grayson clawed out a tremendous win against Bernardo Samper. For the first two games Samper looked the goods his fast hands and feet too much for the Kiwi. However Grayson's match toughness began to emerge and he took the front of the court and began to push the Columbian to the four corners. Grayson never looked comfortable however did enough to make it over the line in a long five setter.

A very interesting match was provided by veteran Canadian Shahier Razik and young Pakastani Yasir Butt. The first two games looked like routine play for Razik, working his opponent short and long with extreme accuracy on the backhand and maintain his T-position.  Although Butt lead the second the standard consistent Razik formula was enough to come back and take a two games to zero lead in the match.  Towards the end of the third, Butt tried something new, he extended his backswing and began thumping the ball long and short in to the nick,  and wow Yasir can hit as hard as anyone. The extra 20% of pace, perhaps a little surprisingly,  unsettled the Canadian and  Butt began to take the front and get more opportunity to shoot.  This was enough to win the third. Perhaps throguh tiredness Butt did not use that tactic enough in the fourth and Razik brought the match back to his comfort zone to regain control and take the match after 70 minutes of classy squash.

Semis : Sunday 14th

Ryan Cuskelly maintained his tremendous run through the semi-finals of the National Capital Open 2010, dispatching an in-form Martin Knight in straight sets.  Early in the match Knight looked sharp establishing his "wall of defense" that had served him well in the early rounds. Cuskelly however was willing to be patient and bide his time, chipping at the wall and accumulating points when the opportunity presented. Although the score was unflattering for Knight it did not properly reflect the closeness of the match. Knight never wilted and made it tough for Cuskelly to the end. Cuskelly was itching to shoot short for the nick but Knight's excellent length meant he often had to wait many tens of shots in to the rally for an attempt. In the end it was definitely a case of the superior player maintaining a slight edge over a sustained period rather than an opening of the flood gates. The bottom line is however, that Cuskelly certainly has displayed a level of skill and maturity  beyond his ranking and will be tough to roll in the final.

Only one man stands in Cuskelly's way, 2009 NCO winner and Canadian veteran Shahier Razik, who proved too good for the draw's other kiwi, Campbell Grayson.  Grayson suffered stomach flu through the week and did not appear at full strength whilst Razik on the other hand stuck to his usual formula and that was enough to see the match through in four sets. Razik has owned the front left of the court through the tournament and no one has come close to blunting that weapon, but given that Cuskelly is playing exquisite squash AND is a left hander makes for an interesting dynamic...we await in anticipation.

Final : Monday 15th

Shahier Razik retained his National Capital Open crown with a masterful display of accurate, defensive squash, seeing him to victory in three sets over an even hour. The beautifully executed strategy defused the attack that opponent Ryan Cuskelly had used successfully to reach the final.

Both players played conservatively to length for the first 5-10 minutes of play, but Cuskelly soon looked for opportunities to cut the ball and play short. This avenue was brilliantly denied by Razik however, who controlled the game and pinned Cuskelly to the back of the court  by combining a slower pace with continual changes of direction,  all executed with stunning accuracy.   Despite the patience he had showed in earlier matches this backcourt game appeared to frustrate the young Aussie and Razik systematically accumulated points from his opponent's periodic mistakes.

In the second and third games Cuskelly displayed patches of the brilliance that saw him to the final, as he found a way to force the odd opportunity to volley and shoot for the nick.  It wasn't enough however, and even when he delivered his attacking best Razik had the answers turning defense in to attack with incredibly accurate counter drops and lobs.

Nonetheless, it was Razik's width that won the day; a remarkable display of basic squash, made all the more remarkable by the fact it was quite at odds with the way he had approached his previous matches, the front left wall strategy was almost entirely abandoned. The fact he was wise enough to know a different approach was required to counter Cuskelly is just a further indicator of his class. Certainly an extremely worthy and popular winner of the 2010 open.

In addition to the winners check, Cyndy Esty once again added one of her couture signature purses http://web.mac.com/cyndyesty/cyndy_esty_purses/Couture.html   (this year's valued at $850). Shahier secured a $1200 version last year for his new wife, a few wise guys suggested he now needed to work on a girlfriend for the new purse.
